Questions to Ask When Considering a Lawyer or Law Firm...

How long have you been in practice?

Our lawyers have a combined experience of over 100 years of practice. Sometimes the question is asked: "How important is experience?" The answer is that the doctor can do well on his first surgery, but no one really wants to be the test case.

What is your peer rating?

Our law firm has an AV rating. This is the highest rating possible by Martindale-Hubbell, the legal rating service. In fact, Mr. Camic and Mr. Johnson have all been named as Leading American Attorneys in peer voting conducted by the American Research Corporation, an independent research organization. The respect given our firm is most evident when you consider the fact that this firm regularly represents police officers, lawyers, judges and their children.

What is the most serious case you have handled?

Every criminal lawyer in our firm has represented defendants charged with murder. In addition, our lawyers have represented persons charged with narcotic cases, gang cases, reckless homicide and thousands of driving while under the influence cases. In fact, the lawyers in our firm have been called upon several times by Judges to be appointed to represent people accused of serious crimes. The most serious case we handle, however, is the one that our client has in court right now.

Do you meet the Illinois State Bar Association's standards for lead counsel in a capital murder case?

Obviously, most of our cases are not capital cases. A lawyer who meets these standards, however, has displayed the highest level of talent and skill to be qualified to represent persons charged with a death penalty case. All firm partners meet those standards and are qualified to represent persons charged with capital murder. In fact, Mr. Camic helped establish the standards during his tenure as chairman of the Illinois State Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section Counsel.

What did you do before private practice?

This question is rarely asked. The lawyers in our firm have a wide variety of experience both prior to and after entering the practice of law. Our experience includes: the elected State's Attorney of Kane County, the Chief Public Defender, police officers, public interest lawyering, teaching and lecturing in Universities and Colleges, as well as a retired military officer and pilot.
